Fever, sore throat, and headache

Common Cold, Influenza, and COVID-19 can cause fever, headache, sore throat, tiredness, cough, or body aches. Tonsillitis and Strep Throat can make swallowing painful; swollen tonsils or tender neck glands may occur. Glandular Fever may bring marked fatigue and swollen glands.

Allergic Rhinitis can irritate the throat through drainage but does not explain every fever. Acid Reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down. A symptom cluster is not enough to identify one condition, so the timing and accompanying signs matter.

Rest, drink water or warm fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid smoke and other throat irritants. A saline nasal rinse may help congestion when used with safe, clean water and appropriate equipment.

Use fever or pain medicine according to the label, and check with a pharmacist if you have chronic illness, are pregnant, take regular medicines, or are caring for a child. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover prescriptions.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat swelling, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, or a severe worsening headache. Seek urgent advice if you cannot keep fluids down or pass very little urine.

Arrange medical review if symptoms are severe, persist, return after improving, or include a rash, swollen neck glands, or significant fatigue. Testing may be considered when the examination suggests a particular throat or respiratory infection.
