Fever during your period: what to know

Hormonal changes can make some people feel warmer or notice sweating, but that sensation is different from a measured fever. Infection, including a urinary, respiratory, or pelvic infection, can happen during a period. Fever with worsening pelvic pain, unusual discharge, pain during sex, or feeling faint needs prompt medical attention because it may indicate a problem requiring treatment. Note whether the temperature occurs before, during, or after bleeding and whether it follows a new product, medicine, or sexual-health concern.

Check your temperature with a thermometer rather than relying on skin warmth, and record readings with bleeding, pain, discharge, urinary symptoms, and medicines. Drink fluids and rest. Follow the label for any fever or pain medicine, considering allergies, pregnancy possibility, stomach or kidney problems, and other medicines. Avoid inserting anything new into the vagina while symptoms are unexplained, and arrange a medical review if the fever continues or returns.

Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided lower-abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, or a rapidly worsening illness. Get prompt advice for fever with foul-smelling discharge, marked pelvic tenderness, or possible pregnancy. These features need assessment regardless of where you are in the menstrual cycle.

Tell the clinician the temperature readings, cycle timing, bleeding pattern, contraception, pregnancy possibility, sexual-health risks, and any urinary or pelvic symptoms. Ask whether you need an examination or urine testing and which pain medicines are suitable for you.
