Fever with hand, foot and mouth symptoms

Hand, foot and mouth disease commonly presents with fever followed by painful spots or blisters in the mouth and a rash on the hands, feet, or sometimes other areas. A child may eat and drink less because swallowing hurts. Other viral illnesses can also cause fever or a rash, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Do not pop blisters, and wash hands after contact with saliva, stool, or fluid from a blister.

Offer small, frequent sips of water, milk, or an oral rehydration drink; cool, soft foods may be easier than spicy, salty, or acidic foods. Let the child rest and wear loose clothing. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain or fever medicine is suitable for the child's age and weight, and follow the instructions. Keep shared cups, towels, and utensils separate, clean frequently touched surfaces, and keep the child away from close-contact activities while unwell.

Seek urgent care if the child is difficult to wake, confused, breathing poorly, having a seizure, developing a stiff neck, or showing severe dehydration such as no tears, a very dry mouth, or very little urine. Arrange medical advice when mouth pain prevents drinking, vomiting continues, fever is worsening or persistent, the rash looks infected, or the child has a weakened immune system. A clinician can distinguish this pattern from conditions such as Chickenpox or Croup.
