Fever for four days with no other symptoms

Some infections begin with fever before local symptoms appear. A urinary infection, throat infection, respiratory illness, or inflammation may be subtle early on. The absence of cough, rash, pain, or stomach symptoms does not show that the fever is harmless or identify its source. Medicines, heat exposure, and other non-infectious causes can also affect temperature, so a clinician will consider the full context.

Record how the temperature was measured, its highest reading, the time of day it changes, chills or sweating, travel, animal contact, recent procedures, and every medicine or supplement. Mention pregnancy, long-term illness, or reduced immunity.

Arrange a medical appointment or telephone assessment rather than continuing to monitor indefinitely. Drink fluids, rest, and wear light clothing. Use fever medicine only if suitable for you and according to the label or professional advice. Do not take leftover antibiotics, because they may be inappropriate and can complicate assessment.

Check for newly appearing symptoms without repeatedly disturbing yourself. Wash hands and limit close contact if an infection is possible. Keep a written timeline to share during the appointment.

Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, or inability to drink. Urgent assessment is needed for a stiff neck, severe headache, severe abdominal pain, a new non-blanching rash, repeated vomiting, or very little urine.

Get advice sooner for a young child, pregnancy, older age, or a weakened immune system. If the person looks seriously unwell even without a clear symptom, do not wait for another day of monitoring.
