Short answer

Fever lasting three days deserves attention to hydration, associated symptoms, and whether it is improving; ongoing or worsening fever should be assessed by a clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why fever can persist

Fever is a body response, commonly to infection, but its duration does not identify the cause by itself. A cold or COVID-19 may bring cough, sore throat, or tiredness; acute bronchitis may cause a persistent cough. Other clues include pain when urinating, localized abdominal pain, ear pain, or a new rash. Some people have few symptoms at first, so a clinical assessment may still be useful.

Measure temperature with the same method when possible and record the time, symptoms, fluid intake, and medicines. The trend and how you feel matter alongside the reading.

Self-care and monitoring

Drink regularly, rest, and choose light clothing. Eat small amounts if your appetite is low. Use only fever medicine that is suitable for you and follow its package directions; ask a pharmacist if you have a long-term condition, are pregnant, or take other medicines. Do not combine products that contain the same ingredient.

Arrange medical advice when fever has reached three days, especially if it is not settling or a new symptom appears. Keep away from close contact while an infectious illness is possible and wash your hands often.

Urgent warning signs

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, seizure, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Urgent assessment is needed for a stiff neck, severe headache, severe abdominal pain, a non-blanching rash, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine.

Seek earlier advice for babies, older adults, pregnancy, or reduced immunity. A clinician may examine you and decide whether tests or treatment are appropriate.

Questions to prepare

What causes should be considered from my symptoms and examination? Do I need testing? How should I monitor the fever? Which warning signs matter most for me?
