Fever followed by an itchy rash

A rash may be flat, raised, blistered, or made of small spots. It may spread gradually or appear suddenly after the fever changes. Chickenpox can cause an itchy blistering rash with fever, while cellulitis usually causes a painful, warm, red area rather than a widespread itchy rash. Respiratory infections can also occur with fever and skin changes, but a rash cannot identify its cause by appearance alone.

Tell a clinician about new medicines, foods, insect exposure, sick contacts, travel, and whether the rash involves the mouth or eyes. Note when the fever began, when the rash appeared, and whether the skin is painful or peeling.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and keep the room comfortably cool. Wear loose clothing and avoid scratching; trimmed nails and a cool, damp cloth may reduce skin irritation. Do not start antibiotics or use a leftover prescription cream without advice. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which fever or itch treatment is suitable for your age, pregnancy status, allergies, and other medicines.

Limit close contact until a contagious cause has been considered, especially around babies, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity. Take a clear photograph if the rash changes before you are assessed.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, fainting, confusion, a seizure, severe weakness, or a rash that does not fade when pressed and comes with feeling very unwell. Get urgent assessment for purple or blistering skin, painful peeling, severe headache with a stiff neck, or dehydration.

Arrange prompt medical review if the fever continues, the rash is spreading, or you recently began a medicine. A clinician may examine the skin, throat, breathing, and hydration before deciding whether tests or treatment are needed.
