Fever due to food poisoning: what to know

Foodborne germs or toxins can irritate the digestive system and trigger an immune response, producing a raised temperature. The same illness may cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and loose stools. Fever can be part of food poisoning, but its severity and duration vary; symptoms can also overlap with other infections. The main immediate risk is losing more fluid than you can replace, particularly when vomiting and diarrhoea occur together.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Rest, and return to light foods when your appetite improves. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while vomiting or having diarrhoea. Keep a note of when symptoms began, what you ate, and whether you can urinate normally. Do not take antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine without appropriate advice, because the right choice depends on the suspected cause and your symptoms.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange prompt assessment if fever is worsening, symptoms are not settling, or the person is a young child, older adult, pregnant, or living with a condition that affects immunity. IV fluid therapy may be considered when oral fluids cannot replace losses.

Ask whether testing is needed, which fluids and foods are appropriate, how to manage fever, and which symptoms should trigger a return visit. Share medication use, pregnancy, travel, and any blood in stool.
