What should you know about fever due to colds?

A cold is a respiratory infection that may cause a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and sometimes fever. A fever is a body response, not a label for one specific virus. COVID-19 can resemble a cold, while acute bronchitis may follow respiratory symptoms with a more persistent cough.

Pay attention to the direction of symptoms. Improving congestion followed by new fever, chest pain, breathing difficulty, ear pain, or severe facial pain may indicate a problem needing review. A thermometer reading should be considered alongside behaviour, drinking, breathing, and alertness.

Rest, drink fluids, and use saline spray or humidified air for nasal comfort. Choose light clothing and avoid smoking or smoky rooms. If you use a fever or pain medicine, follow the package directions and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have liver, kidney, stomach, or pregnancy-related concerns.

Stay home from close contact while acutely unwell and wash hands after blowing your nose or coughing. Keep a simple symptom record, including temperature, breathing, cough, fluid intake, and urine output.

Get urgent help for struggling to breathe, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, confusion, fainting, a seizure, or inability to wake normally. Seek medical advice for a fever that persists or returns, poor drinking, very little urine, severe pain, or a cough that is worsening rather than settling.

For babies, older adults, pregnancy, or reduced immunity, contact a healthcare professional earlier. Croup-like noisy breathing or a child who is drooling and unable to swallow needs urgent assessment.
