What should you know about a fever certificate?

Short answer

A fever certificate usually records a measured temperature, relevant symptoms, clinical findings, and the clinician's advice; it does not by itself identify the cause of fever.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the record can mean

Fever is the body's response to an underlying process, often an infection, but the number on a thermometer is only one part of the assessment. A clinician may ask when the fever began, whether it comes with cough, rash, vomiting, pain, or urinary symptoms, and whether you have recently travelled or taken new medicines. The certificate may support absence from work or school, but its wording and purpose depend on the examining clinician and the organisation requesting it.

What to do before an appointment

Write down temperature readings, the time and method of measurement, medicines taken, fluid intake, and any new symptoms. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and wear light clothing. Do not share antibiotics or use someone else's prescription. Take the request for the certificate and any relevant medical information to the appointment; a clinician may decide that examination or testing is needed before issuing documentation.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, confusion, a seizure, severe weakness, a stiff neck, a rapidly spreading rash, or inability to keep fluids down. Get prompt advice if fever occurs in a very young infant, follows significant heat exposure, or is accompanied by severe localised pain. A certificate should not delay care when symptoms are worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the certificate covers, whether follow-up is needed, which symptoms should trigger urgent review, and when it is reasonable to return to usual activities.
