Fever and strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is an infection caused by certain bacteria in the throat. Fever is a common presentation of strep throat, and the illness may also cause a red throat, swollen tonsils, white patches, headache, or stomach upset. Cough, runny nose, hoarseness, and red eyes fit a viral illness more closely, although symptoms can overlap. A clinician may examine your throat and neck and use a throat swab or other assessment to decide whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate.

Rest, drink frequent fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Follow the label or a clinician’s advice for fever relief, and do not give children medicines intended for adults. Avoid sharing cups, utensils, or toothbrushes while infection is possible, and wash hands after coughing or sneezing. Arrange a GP Consultation if fever and throat pain are significant, symptoms are worsening, or you need advice about testing. Take Antibiotic Treatment only when prescribed, and follow the prescribed course.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, severe one-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, or marked weakness. Prompt assessment is also sensible when fever persists, dehydration develops, or a child becomes unusually sleepy. A rash, joint swelling, or dark urine after a throat illness needs medical review. These warning signs reflect possible complications or another illness; they do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest Strep Throat or Tonsillitis, whether a throat swab is useful, and which fluids or fever medicines suit your age and health conditions. You can also ask when it is safe to return to school or work and what changes should prompt a follow-up visit.
