Fever and spots on the body: what should you know?

Describe whether the spots are flat, raised, itchy, painful, blistered, or filled with fluid. Viral illnesses such as chickenpox or COVID-19 can affect the skin, while cellulitis tends to cause a warm, tender, expanding area. Recent medicines, heat, insect bites, or contact with a new product may also matter. Fever plus spots does not identify one condition, so the whole pattern and the person’s general state are relevant.

Rest, drink fluids, and keep the room comfortably cool. Use gentle washing and loose clothing; avoid picking, scratching, or applying several new creams. Do not share towels, clothing, or personal items if an infectious rash is possible. Record the temperature, take photographs in good light, and list new medicines, foods, products, travel, and contact with anyone who is unwell.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, collapse, confusion, a stiff neck, severe headache, or a rash that looks purple or bruise-like and does not fade with pressure. Seek prompt review for rapidly spreading redness, severe skin pain, blisters over a large area, dehydration, or a fever in a very young baby. Arrange a clinical review if the spots continue to spread or the person is becoming more unwell.
