What should you know about fever and skin rash?

A rash may be flat, raised, scaly, ring-shaped, crusted, blistered, or concentrated in skin folds. Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Drug Rash, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm, and Scabies can look different from one another, and fever may be related to the same illness or occur separately.

Write down when the fever and rash began, any new medicine or product, recent travel or sick contacts, and whether the rash itches, hurts, blanches with pressure, or changes quickly. Do not rely on appearance alone to diagnose it.

Rest, drink fluids if able, keep the room comfortably cool, and avoid applying new creams until the cause is clearer. Take a photograph in good light to show how the rash changes, and use fever medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician.

Contact a healthcare professional for advice, particularly if the rash is new, widespread, painful, or follows a new medicine. Mention every prescription, over-the-counter product, and supplement you use.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, facial swelling, confusion, fainting, severe headache, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, a purple or bruise-like rash, skin peeling, painful blisters, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth. Prompt review is also needed when someone is very unwell or cannot keep fluids down.

Ask what features point toward infection, irritation, allergy, or inflammation; whether any medicine should be stopped; which tests may help; and what change should prompt emergency care.
