Fever and red rash: what should you know?

Note when the fever began, whether the rash is flat or raised, and whether it blanches when pressed. It may be linked with a viral illness such as chickenpox or COVID-19, or with a local skin infection such as cellulitis. Cough, sore throat, vomiting, joint pain, itching, or a recent medicine can help a clinician narrow the possibilities. A rash is not a diagnosis by itself.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and wear light clothing. Avoid scratching and keep the skin clean. Take only fever medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label directions; do not give a child medicine intended for an adult. Avoid close contact with people who may be vulnerable until the cause is clearer, especially if the rash is spreading or blistering. Photograph changes in the rash and record any new food, medicine, or product.

Get urgent medical help if the person is confused, unusually sleepy, struggling to breathe, faint, has a severe headache or stiff neck, or cannot keep fluids down. Seek prompt assessment for purple or bruise-like spots, a rapidly spreading rash, severe pain, swelling of the lips or tongue, or a fever in a very young baby. Contact a clinician if the fever persists, the rash worsens, or the person has a weakened immune system.
