Fever and pregnancy: what should you know?

Pregnancy can make infections more significant, while fever may come from a respiratory, urinary, stomach, or other infection. The temperature reading matters, but so do symptoms such as painful urination, breathlessness, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. A fever does not reveal its cause by itself. Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly so they can consider your stage of pregnancy, medical history, recent exposures, and examination findings.

Measure your temperature, rest, and take frequent fluids. Wear light clothing and avoid overheating. Before taking a fever reducer, cold remedy, antibiotic, or herbal product, check with a clinician or pharmacist because some products are unsuitable in pregnancy and combination remedies may duplicate ingredients. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Keep a record of the temperature, timing, associated symptoms, fluid intake, and any change in fetal movement if you normally monitor it.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, severe headache, stiff neck, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, or reduced fetal movement. Get same-day medical advice for a fever that persists, rises, or returns, or for urinary symptoms, a new rash, or feeling markedly unwell. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you have a condition that weakens immunity or a pregnancy complication.
