Fever and post-nasal drip: what should you know?

Short answer
Fever with post-nasal drip often accompanies an upper-airway infection, but breathing problems, dehydration, or persistent fever warrant medical advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Fluids
- Regular drinks can thin mucus and reduce throat irritation.
- Nasal care
- Use safe water if performing a saline rinse.
What it may mean
Post-nasal drip is mucus moving from the back of the nose into the throat. It can cause throat clearing, cough, hoarseness, nausea, or a feeling of mucus stuck behind the nose. Fever makes an infection more likely than simple allergy, though symptoms can overlap. A common cold or COVID-19 may cause this pattern; infections lower in the airways can add cough or wheezing. The colour of mucus alone does not determine whether antibiotics are needed.
What to do now
Rest and drink regularly to keep secretions loose. Saline nasal spray or a gentle saline rinse may reduce blockage; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse. Keep the head slightly raised while sleeping and avoid smoke or other irritants. Follow the label for any fever medicine and check with a pharmacist before using decongestants, especially for children, pregnancy, high blood pressure, or other medical conditions. Do not share cups or towels while fever is present.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for shortness of breath, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, inability to swallow fluids, or severe dehydration. Arrange prompt review for a child who is unusually sleepy, breathing rapidly, or struggling to feed. Contact a clinician when fever is not settling, symptoms are worsening after initial improvement, facial or ear pain is severe, or the cough continues with wheezing. People with weakened immunity or significant lung disease should seek advice early.
Questions for your doctor
Does the pattern suggest a nose, throat, or chest infection? Would a saline treatment be suitable? Which medicines are safe with my age, pregnancy status, and existing conditions?

Questions people ask
Can post-nasal drip cause fever?
The drainage itself is not usually the source of fever; an infection causing the nasal symptoms may produce fever.
Is coloured mucus proof of a bacterial infection?
No. Mucus colour can change during many respiratory illnesses and does not diagnose the cause.
