Fever and Itchy Throat: What You Should Know

An itchy or scratchy throat may come from inflammation of the throat lining. A viral respiratory illness, including a common cold, can produce throat irritation alongside fever, tiredness, a blocked or runny nose, cough, or body aches. Symptoms can change over several days.

Allergic rhinitis may cause an itchy throat, sneezing, watery eyes, and clear nasal drainage. Allergy symptoms usually do not cause a fever. Irritation from dry air, smoke, dust, or mouth breathing can also make the throat feel itchy. If fever is present, an infection or another cause should be considered rather than assuming the symptoms are only an allergy.

A food allergy can cause throat itching soon after eating, especially when it occurs with hives, lip or tongue swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or dizziness. That pattern needs urgent attention because allergic reactions can progress quickly.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose soft foods or warm drinks if swallowing is uncomfortable. A humidified room and avoiding smoke or other throat irritants may ease dryness. Wash your hands and avoid sharing cups or utensils while an infection is possible.

Check your temperature with a reliable thermometer and note when the fever and throat symptoms began. Use fever or pain medicine only as directed on the label or by a clinician, taking account of your age, pregnancy, allergies, and other medicines. Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers unless a clinician specifically advises it.

A pharmacist or clinician can help distinguish an infection from an allergy and advise whether allergy medication is suitable. Antibiotics do not treat viral illnesses and should not be started without medical advice.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, faintness, confusion, or a severe allergic reaction after eating or taking a medicine.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if the fever is persistent or worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, you are passing very little urine, or you develop a severe headache, stiff neck, chest pain, a widespread rash, or marked weakness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immunity or significant long-term conditions may need earlier advice.

Contact a clinician if the throat symptoms are severe, keep returning, or are not improving, particularly when there is no obvious cold symptom or when one-sided throat pain makes swallowing difficult.
