What should you know about fever and impetigo?

Short answer

Impetigo causes contagious sores that may ooze and form honey-coloured crusts, while fever can suggest spreading infection or a separate illness requiring medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the symptoms

Impetigo often begins around the nose or mouth, but it can affect any area where skin is scratched, irritated, or already inflamed. Blisters or shallow sores may break and leave sticky crusting. Atopic Dermatitis can weaken the skin barrier and make infection easier to develop, but a crusted rash is not automatically impetigo.

Fever, marked tiredness, rapidly expanding redness, warmth, swelling, or tender glands raises concern that the infection is more than a small surface patch. The appearance and location of the sores, along with the person's general health, guide diagnosis.

Practical steps

Arrange medical advice when impetigo is suspected, especially if fever is present. Gently wash the area, pat it dry, avoid picking, and cover sores loosely when practical. Wash hands after touching the skin, do not share towels or razors, and launder items that contact the sores.

Treatment may involve Topical Antibiotic Therapy for limited disease or Antibiotics For Skin Infection when the infection is more extensive or the clinician considers oral medicine appropriate. Use prescribed treatment for the advised course.

When to seek care

Get urgent care for confusion, severe weakness, breathing difficulty, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, swelling near the eye, or inability to drink. A baby, someone with reduced immunity, or a person whose fever is worsening should be assessed promptly.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the sores are impetigo, whether a swab or prescription is needed, how to reduce spread at home, and when school, work, sport, or close contact can safely resume.

Questions people ask

Is impetigo contagious?

Yes. Bacteria can spread through direct contact and contaminated towels, clothing, bedding, or shared personal items.

Can I remove the crusts?

Do not pick them. Gentle cleansing as advised by a clinician helps protect the skin and limit irritation.
