What should you know about fever and heat rash?

Heat rash, also called prickly heat, often appears as small red bumps in sweaty or covered areas such as the neck, chest, back, groin, or skin folds. The rash itself is not typically the reason someone has a fever. Fever can accompany a viral illness, another infection, or heat-related illness, and the surrounding symptoms help distinguish these possibilities.

Notice whether the skin feels hot and dry or sweaty, whether the rash is spreading, and whether there is pain, pus, marked swelling, or a change in alertness. A rash with fever should not automatically be labelled heat rash.

Move to a cool place, loosen heavy clothing, and keep the affected skin dry and gently clean. Cool compresses can ease prickling; avoid rubbing, fragranced products, and thick occlusive creams over active bumps. Drink fluids if you can do so safely, and follow the label for any fever medicine you normally use.

If the bumps persist after cooling, become painful, or the fever continues, arrange a clinical review. A clinician may recommend a soothing moisturizer such as Emollient Therapy or another treatment after examining the rash.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, a severe headache, repeated vomiting, a rapidly worsening rash, or skin that becomes purple, blistered, or very tender. Prompt assessment is also sensible for a fever in a very young child, a person with reduced immunity, or anyone who cannot keep fluids down.

Ask what may be causing the fever, whether the rash fits heat rash, which products are safe on the area, and what changes should trigger urgent review.
