Fever and bumps on the body

Bumps may be raised, fluid-filled, itchy, painful, or surrounded by redness. They can appear with viral illnesses such as Chickenpox, or with a local skin problem such as Cellulitis. Note where they started, whether they blanch when pressed, whether they are spreading, and whether anyone else is unwell. A photograph can help show change over time.

Measure the temperature and encourage fluids. Keep nails short and avoid scratching; a cool cloth may soothe irritation. Do not squeeze bumps or apply leftover antibiotics, steroid creams, or household remedies without advice. Wash hands, avoid sharing towels, and limit close contact if the rash could be contagious. Arrange a clinical review when the cause is unclear or the skin is becoming painful, hot, or swollen.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, collapse, confusion, severe drowsiness, or a rash that does not fade when pressed and appears with serious illness. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, purple or blistering areas, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or poor drinking. Infants and people with reduced immunity need a lower threshold for assessment.

Ask whether the bumps look infectious, whether testing is needed, how to protect household members, which skin products are safe, and which changes require immediate review.
