Fever after typhoid vaccine: what to know

Vaccines stimulate the immune system, and some people feel warm, tired, or achy while that response develops. The timing, vaccine type, temperature, and other symptoms help distinguish a routine reaction from an unrelated illness. Fever does not prove that the vaccine caused every symptom.

Check the temperature with a reliable thermometer and record when it began. Rest, drink fluids regularly, and wear light clothing in a comfortable room. Use fever medicine only if suitable for the person and according to the label or a clinician’s advice; do not give aspirin to children. Do not repeat a dose or combine products without checking their ingredients.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, confusion, a seizure, severe weakness, or a rapidly spreading rash. Contact a clinician promptly if the fever is high, continues beyond the expected short reaction, returns after settling, or occurs with repeated vomiting, dehydration, severe headache, or worsening pain. A very young child, pregnancy, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for advice.

Ask which typhoid vaccine was given, how long a reaction is expected to last, which fever medicine is appropriate, and whether another infection or medication could explain the symptoms.
