What should you know about fetal growth scan 36 weeks?

During the scan, measurements of the baby’s head, abdomen and thigh bone help estimate size. The sonographer may check presentation, placental location and amniotic fluid, and may use Doppler to assess blood flow. At this stage, the scan is a snapshot rather than a promise about birth weight. The result is interpreted alongside your dates, earlier measurements, blood pressure, movement history and other pregnancy findings. A scan can also help the team discuss whether routine care, closer observation or a birth plan is appropriate.

Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and bring questions about the report. Ask whether the estimated size follows the earlier growth pattern and whether the baby’s position affects birth planning. Continue attending scheduled antenatal care and follow the movement guidance from your maternity team. Depending on the findings, you may be offered another assessment or a discussion about timing and place of birth. Call promptly if movements are reduced, absent or clearly different from your baby’s usual pattern. Seek urgent help for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, or severe headache with visual symptoms or feeling very unwell.
