What should you know about a fetal growth and wellbeing scan?

The sonographer measures parts of the baby, estimates growth, and compares findings with earlier scans and the pregnancy dates. The examination may also review movement, breathing movements, amniotic fluid, placental position, and blood flow when clinically indicated.

A scan is a snapshot rather than a guarantee about future health. A measurement outside the expected pattern may reflect dates, constitution, technical limits, or a genuine growth concern. Your obstetric team interprets the whole picture.

Bring previous scan information if requested and follow the clinic’s instructions about food, fluids, and bladder preparation. Wear clothing that allows access to the abdomen. Ask when the report will be reviewed and whether another scan or Doppler assessment is planned.

Continue routine antenatal care and pay attention to your baby’s usual movements. A normal scan does not change the need to report reduced or changed movement promptly.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed fetal movement, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, or severe abdominal pain. Do not wait for a scheduled scan if a new concern develops.

Ask which measurements were reassuring, whether growth is following the earlier pattern, and what the fluid, placenta, and blood-flow findings mean. Confirm the next appointment and which symptoms should prompt same-day contact.
