Fertility preservation in young adults

For many young adults with ovaries, egg freezing involves medicines that stimulate several follicles, monitoring with scans and blood tests, and a procedure to collect mature eggs. Embryo freezing involves fertilising eggs before storage. The suitable option depends on age, ovarian reserve, partner or donor choices, personal beliefs, time available, and the reason for preservation.

Preservation can be considered before some cancer treatments, surgery, hormone treatment, or conditions that may affect ovarian function. It does not guarantee a future pregnancy, and stored material may not be used for many years or at all.

Ask for a fertility discussion as soon as a potentially fertility-affecting treatment is proposed. Bring information about your diagnosis, planned treatment, medicines, menstrual history, and future family goals. A fertility team can explain preparation, timing, storage, later use, and alternatives such as donor material or using tissue in selected situations.

If treatment cannot wait, tell the oncology or specialist team immediately. They can coordinate referrals and explain which choices are realistic within the available time. Emotional support is also appropriate because decisions can feel urgent and personal.

Seek advice before starting treatment or surgery whenever possible, even if you are unsure about having children. Do not delay urgent treatment while arranging a consultation; ask the treating team how fertility planning can fit safely around it. Seek review later if periods change, fertility concerns arise, or you want to discuss using stored material.
