Female itching in the pubic area: what to know

Redness after shaving, waxing, a new cleanser, sanitary product, detergent, or tight clothing can point to contact irritation. Dry, cracked, or repeatedly inflamed skin can occur with eczema. A moist rash in the folds may fit a skin yeast infection. Thickened, scaly, sharply outlined, or purple-toned areas need an examination because conditions such as psoriasis or lichen planus can affect genital skin. Intense itching that is worse at night, especially when household contacts itch too, can occur with scabies. Itching alone does not identify one cause.

Wash gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and wear loose breathable underwear. Pause fragranced sprays, wipes, deodorants, harsh antiseptics, and recently introduced products. Avoid scratching and do not place steroid, antifungal, or combination creams on genital skin unless a clinician has advised that product and use. Note when the itch began, where it is located, visible changes, shaving or product exposure, discharge or pain, and whether anyone close to you has similar symptoms.

Arrange a medical assessment if the itch persists, keeps returning, spreads, or comes with sores, blisters, bleeding, marked swelling, pain, fever, unusual discharge, or burning when passing urine. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, or difficulty passing urine. A clinician may inspect the external skin and choose tests or treatment based on the findings.
