Feline mandibular osteomyelitis: what should you know?

A cat with jawbone infection may show swelling around the face or jaw, pain when the mouth is touched, drooling, bad breath, difficulty eating, or a change in how the jaw closes. Some cats hide discomfort and only eat soft food or stop grooming. Causes can include dental disease, a wound, a bite, surgery, or infection spreading from nearby tissues. These signs can also occur with other dental or oral problems, so they do not identify the cause by themselves.

A veterinarian may examine the mouth and jaw, assess hydration and general health, and use imaging or laboratory tests when needed. Treatment depends on the source and extent of infection and may include prescribed antimicrobial medicine, dental treatment, drainage, or removal of unhealthy bone. Bone Grafting may be discussed when bone loss affects repair, but suitability is case-specific.

Contact a veterinarian promptly rather than trying to open the mouth forcefully or giving human pain medicine. Offer the cat access to water and its usual soft, easy-to-eat food if it can swallow, but do not delay care if eating is difficult. Keep the cat indoors, quiet, and separated from other animals if a fight wound is possible. Follow prescribed medicine exactly and return for review if appetite, swelling, drooling, or comfort does not improve.

Seek emergency veterinary help if the cat cannot breathe or swallow, has heavy bleeding, collapses, becomes severely weak, or cannot take in water. Same-day assessment is appropriate for facial swelling, pus, feverish behaviour, refusal to eat, or rapidly worsening pain. Cats that stop eating can deteriorate quickly, particularly when pain prevents normal feeding.
