What should you know about feline demodicosis?

Feline demodicosis is a mite-associated skin disorder that can cause hair loss, scaling, redness and itch in cats. Similar signs can arise from allergies, infection or other conditions, so a veterinarian may examine skin samples before choosing treatment.

Signs can include patchy hair loss, red or darkened skin, crusting, flakes, bumps and persistent grooming. The face, ears, neck or limbs may be affected, and some cats have sore areas around the claws. A more generalised pattern may prompt the veterinarian to look for an underlying illness or medication-related problem. Cats with skin disease can also develop secondary bacterial or yeast infection, which may add odour, discharge or tenderness.

Arrange a veterinary appointment and avoid applying human creams, insecticides or essential oils. Keep the cat's bedding clean, limit contact with other pets until the diagnosis is clear, and prevent excessive scratching where possible.
