Short answer

Feet that keep itching may reflect dry skin, contact irritation, eczema, psoriasis or an infection, so the skin pattern matters.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clues
Dryness, scaling, redness, blisters or itch between the toes
Helpful detail
Note new footwear, products, dampness and whether anyone close is itchy

What it can mean

Dry, tight or flaky soles often point to a weakened skin barrier. Itching between the toes with peeling or cracking can occur with Athlete's Foot, while a new rash after footwear, detergent or a product may suggest Contact Dermatitis. Itchy patches elsewhere may fit Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis; intensely itchy bumps, especially in household contacts, need assessment for Scabies. Hives tend to be raised and change location, whereas a stubborn scaly patch can have another cause.

Scratching can create small breaks that sting and allow infection. The itch itself does not identify one diagnosis, and several causes can overlap.

What you can do now

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry carefully between the toes and apply a plain moisturiser to dry skin. Use breathable footwear, change damp socks and pause any newly introduced foot product. Keep nails short so scratching causes less damage. Avoid applying steroid, antifungal or antibiotic creams without advice when the cause is unclear, because the wrong product can hide the pattern or irritate broken skin.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if itching persists, spreads, repeatedly returns or disrupts sleep, or if there is scaling, cracking, blisters or a rash on other areas. Seek prompt medical care for increasing warmth, pain, swelling, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness or difficulty walking. A clinician may examine the skin and ask about products, footwear, contacts and other symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern fit eczema, contact irritation or a fungal infection? Should I stop any current cream? What care is suitable for cracked skin, and how can I reduce recurrence?

Questions people ask

Can dry skin make feet itch?

Yes. Dryness can weaken the skin barrier and cause tightness, flaking and persistent itch.

Should I scratch itchy feet?

Try not to; scratching can break the skin. Cooling the area and moisturising dry skin may help while you arrange advice.
