Short answer

Feeling cold with a runny nose often reflects a viral illness or allergy, while severe or persistent symptoms need review.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Feeling cold with a runny nose often reflects a viral illness or allergy, while severe or persistent symptoms need review. A runny nose occurs when the nasal lining produces extra fluid in response to irritation, infection or an allergen.

What the pattern may suggest

The common cold can bring watery discharge, sneezing, sore throat, cough and tiredness. Influenza and COVID-19 may add stronger body aches, headache, exhaustion or fever, although symptoms vary. Allergic rhinitis, pet allergy and house dust mite allergy are more likely when symptoms recur around a trigger and include itchy eyes or nose. Sinusitis may cause facial pressure, blocked passages, thick discharge or reduced smell. Feeling cold can come from shivering, a cool environment or the start of an infection; the symptoms do not identify one condition by themselves.

Comfort measures

Rest, drink fluids and use saline nasal spray or rinses prepared as directed. Wash your hands, avoid sharing towels, and consider staying home from close contact while you feel acutely unwell. Keep a note of triggers, discharge colour, temperature and breathing symptoms. A pharmacist can advise on suitable antihistamines or other symptom relief, especially if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, or take regular medicines. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed.

When to seek medical advice

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or throat, confusion, fainting or blue skin. Arrange prompt assessment for chest pain, dehydration, severe facial pain or swelling, worsening symptoms after initial improvement, or a high or persistent temperature. A clinician should review symptoms that keep returning, last longer than expected, or disrupt sleep and daily activities.

Questions to ask

Does the timing suggest an allergy or infection? Would testing for COVID-19 or another illness be useful? Which nasal treatment is safe with my other medicines, and when should I return if symptoms continue?
