What you may feel before your waters break

The waters are the fluid-filled membranes around the baby. They may rupture as a noticeable gush, as a slow trickle, or without a clear sensation. Dampness can also come from urine or normal pregnancy discharge, so the appearance and ongoing pattern are useful details. Clear or pale fluid can still be amniotic fluid. Regular tightenings, pelvic pressure, backache, or a change in discharge may occur with labour, but their presence does not predict exactly when the membranes will rupture.

Use a clean maternity pad, note the time, colour, smell, and amount, and contact your midwife, maternity unit, or obstetric team for advice. Avoid tampons and do not put anything into the vagina until you have been assessed. Keep track of baby movements and mention any contractions, bleeding, pain, or fever. If fluid loss happens before the expected stage of pregnancy, it may be related to preterm labour and needs prompt guidance.

Contact maternity care immediately for suspected waters breaking, reduced baby movements, vaginal bleeding, green or brown fluid, fever, severe abdominal pain, or regular painful tightenings. Do not wait for a large gush: a persistent trickle can also need assessment.
