What should you know about FDA-approved tamoxifen?

Tamoxifen is a selective oestrogen-receptor modulator. In breast tissue it can block oestrogen signals that may encourage some hormone-sensitive breast cancer cells to grow. It may be prescribed after treatment, for advanced disease, or to reduce risk in carefully selected people; the purpose and duration depend on the clinical situation.

Because tamoxifen can act differently in different tissues, benefits and harms need individual discussion. It is not suitable for every person, and its use can be affected by pregnancy, blood-clot history, medicines, and the reason it is being considered.

Take it exactly as prescribed and ask what to do after a missed dose. Tell your clinician about anticoagulants, antidepressants, hormonal medicines, supplements, previous clots, stroke, liver disease, and any planned operation. Do not stop treatment without discussing the reason and an alternative plan.

Report new vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, vision changes, leg swelling, sudden chest symptoms, or unusual breathlessness. Keep scheduled reviews so the team can assess symptoms, medicines, and ongoing benefit.

Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, or a painful swollen leg. Contact your care team promptly for unexpected vaginal bleeding, persistent pelvic symptoms, or a new change in vision.
