What should you know about a fatty lump on the skin?

Lipomas are soft-tissue growths composed of fat cells beneath the skin. They often develop gradually and may feel soft, smooth, and slightly mobile. They can occur on many body areas and may be painless, although pressure from their position can cause discomfort. A visual description such as fatty lump is not a diagnosis: cysts, enlarged structures, and other growths may appear similar.

During an assessment, the clinician may ask about the lump’s onset, growth, tenderness, mobility, depth, and effect on movement or clothing. The skin over a lipoma often looks normal, but any surface change should be mentioned.

Book a routine examination for a new, persistent, enlarging, painful, or uncertain lump. Photographing the area or noting its approximate size can help you describe change, but do not repeatedly press it or try to empty it. If a lipoma is confirmed and causes no problems, monitoring may be enough. Seek prompt medical review when a lump grows quickly, feels hard or fixed, becomes increasingly painful, is deep, or develops redness, warmth, ulceration, bleeding, or drainage. Fever with a hot, tender lump needs timely attention. Seek urgent care for severe pain, rapidly worsening swelling, or feeling very unwell.
