What should you know about fat transfer to fingers?

Fat is collected from a donor area, processed and placed through small access points into a selected finger area. The goal may be to restore soft-tissue fullness, improve contour or provide padding where the tissue is thin. Fingers are compact structures containing tendons, nerves and blood vessels, so precise assessment matters. Early swelling can make rings tight and movement stiff; the transferred volume and contour may change during healing.

Tell the clinician about cold sensitivity, numbness, arthritis, prior injury, scars and hand-intensive work. Dermal Fillers may be an alternative for some soft-tissue goals, but material choice depends on the location and function required.

Remove rings before swelling begins and ask when they can safely be worn again. Discuss medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, smoking or vaping, and any history of poor wound healing. Keep access points clean, elevate the hand if advised, protect it from knocks and follow the plan for gentle movement. Do not massage or apply pressure unless your clinician specifically instructs you.

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, drainage, fever or swelling that continues to worsen. Seek urgent assessment for a finger that becomes pale, blue, cold, severely numb, difficult to move or increasingly tight.

Ask how the procedure could affect grip and finger movement, whether rings and keyboard work need to be paused, how the donor site will heal, and what changes in colour, temperature or sensation need immediate attention.
