What should you know about fat transfer to bum?

Fat is collected from a donor area, prepared, and placed into selected layers of the buttocks to shape fullness. Some transferred fat may change during healing, so the early appearance is not the final result. Suitability depends on your anatomy, available donor fat, medical history, and the clinician's assessment of the requested contour.

This is different from simply injecting a product into the buttocks. Ask exactly what material will be used, where it will be placed, and who will provide anaesthesia and postoperative care.

Before booking, discuss the donor and recipient sites, expected swelling and bruising, wound care, sleeping and sitting positions, time away from work, and how follow-up will be arranged. Give a full list of medicines and supplements, and disclose smoking or vaping and any previous surgery.

Follow the clinic's instructions about pressure on the buttocks, movement, garments, bathing, and driving. Keep the planned review appointments, because both the donor area and the grafted area need monitoring.

Call the surgical team promptly if pain is worsening rather than easing, one side becomes markedly more swollen, redness spreads, the skin becomes hot, or wounds leak fluid. Fever, foul-smelling drainage, or a sudden change in skin colour also needs prompt assessment. Get emergency help for breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or sudden weakness.
