What should you know about fat transfer on legs?

The aim may be to soften an indentation, restore volume, or improve balance between areas; it is not a method for treating unexplained leg swelling or pain.

Fat is collected with liposuction, processed, and placed through small openings into the planned contour. The donor site and treated leg may bruise, swell, feel tight, or have altered sensation. Early asymmetry is common while fluid and swelling shift, and some of the placed fat may not remain. A consultation should distinguish a cosmetic contour concern from a medical problem such as a new lump, circulation change, or persistent swelling.

Your clinician should examine the shape, skin quality, walking pattern, prior procedures, and the amount of tissue available for transfer. Mention blood-clot history, vein problems, diabetes, smoking, and all medicines before planning.

Ask where the fat will be taken from, how the leg will be supported, and when you can return to driving, work, exercise, and long periods of sitting. Prepare loose clothing and help with transport if medication or anaesthesia affects you. Follow wound instructions, move gently as advised, stay hydrated, and avoid pressure on the treated contour when your team tells you to. Attend reviews so healing and symmetry can be assessed.

Report increasing pain, rapidly expanding swelling, spreading redness, fever, drainage, wound opening, or a new area of hardness. Seek urgent care for sudden one-sided calf or thigh swelling, warmth, severe tenderness, chest pain, breathlessness, coughing blood, or fainting. These symptoms need prompt assessment and should not be explained away as normal cosmetic recovery.
