Short answer

Fat indigestion describes discomfort after eating fatty food, such as fullness, burning, bloating, nausea, or belching; repeated or severe symptoms deserve assessment for an underlying digestive condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical symptoms
Fullness, burning, bloating, belching, or nausea after eating
Useful record
Meal timing, pain location, duration, and accompanying symptoms
Emergency signs
Vomiting blood, black stools, jaundice, chest pain, or severe pain

What may be behind it

Fatty meals can take longer to leave the stomach and may worsen reflux or upper-abdominal discomfort. Symptoms can include early fullness, burping, nausea, sour fluid in the throat, or pain beneath the breastbone. Acid reflux, gastritis, a peptic ulcer, hiatus hernia, or Helicobacter pylori infection can produce similar symptoms. Pain after a rich meal that is focused in the upper right abdomen and may spread to the back or shoulder can fit gallstone-related pain, particularly when it persists. The food trigger is useful information but does not identify the cause on its own. Keep a brief symptom and meal record, including timing, portion size, pain location, and bowel changes.

Steps that may help

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and reduce foods that repeatedly trigger symptoms rather than removing broad food groups without advice. Avoid lying down soon after eating, and consider whether alcohol, smoking, spicy foods, or late meals worsen the pattern. Gentle movement after eating may feel more comfortable than vigorous exercise. A pharmacist can discuss a short-term option such as acid reflux medication, but check first if you are pregnant, take other medicines, or have kidney or liver disease. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms recur, interfere with eating, or continue despite practical changes.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, chest pain, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, yellow skin, fever with upper-abdominal pain, or repeated vomiting. Seek prompt assessment for trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, anaemia symptoms, or pain that wakes you repeatedly. Sudden pain in the upper right abdomen with fever or jaundice needs timely evaluation. Do not assume that every episode after fatty food is simple indigestion.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pain pattern suggest reflux, gallstones, or another digestive problem? Do I need testing for Helicobacter pylori? Which medicines or foods should I avoid, and how long is it reasonable to try self-care?

Questions people ask

Why does fatty food cause indigestion for some people?
