Fasting lipid profile: what should you know?

The panel commonly reports total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides. Fasting can give a clearer triglyceride measurement in some situations, although the preparation required depends on the reason for testing and local laboratory instructions. The result is interpreted alongside age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, kidney health, family history, and previous cardiovascular disease. One result is not a diagnosis by itself, and a result outside the desired range does not explain its cause without context. Your clinician may compare it with earlier testing or check whether illness, medicines, alcohol intake, or a change in diet could have influenced it.

Confirm exactly when to stop food and whether plain water is allowed. Do not assume that coffee, milk, juice, chewing gum, or supplements fit the laboratory instructions. Take regular medicines only as directed; ask before changing diabetes treatment because fasting can affect blood glucose. Avoid an unusually heavy meal or strenuous exercise before testing unless your clinician says otherwise. Tell the testing team if you could not complete the fast, and drink water if permitted to make the blood draw easier. Results should be discussed with a clinician rather than interpreted from a single flagged value.

The test itself is usually brief, but tell staff if you feel faint, sweaty, confused, or unwell while fasting. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, or fainting, regardless of the test result. Arrange follow-up when your clinician recommends it, particularly if you have diabetes, kidney disease, a strong family history of early heart disease, or a previous cardiovascular event. Do not start, stop, or alter a cholesterol medicine solely from a printed result.
