What should you know about fascin immunohistochemistry?

Short answer
Fascin immunohistochemistry is a laboratory stain that helps pathologists see fascin protein in cells within a tissue sample.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How this test is used
Immunohistochemistry uses antibodies linked to a visible marker. In fascin staining, the antibody attaches to fascin where it is present, allowing the pathologist to describe staining in the sampled cells. The report may discuss whether staining is seen, where it appears, and how strong or widespread it is.
A fascin result is one part of the pathology picture. It does not, by itself, establish a cancer diagnosis, identify the original site, or predict what will happen. The pathologist interprets it alongside the cell appearance, tissue structure, clinical history, imaging, and other stains.
What happens next
Usually, no separate procedure is needed for the stain because it is performed on tissue already collected during a biopsy. Ask whether enough tissue remains for additional testing and when the complete pathology report is expected. Request an explanation of unfamiliar terms such as positive, negative, focal, diffuse, or intensity.
If the result is being used to help classify an unusual tumour, your team may recommend further stains or specialist review. Keep the pathology report with your imaging and treatment records so different specialists are working from the same information.
When to contact your care team
Contact the service that performed the biopsy for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or bleeding from the biopsy site. Seek urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness. These concerns relate to the procedure or your general health, not to the fascin stain itself.
Questions for your doctor
Ask why fascin was ordered, what the staining pattern means in your specific tissue, which other findings support the diagnosis, and whether the result changes treatment. Ask who can provide a pathology review if the wording remains unclear.
Questions people ask
Is fascin immunohistochemistry a scan?
No. It is performed on a tissue section in a pathology laboratory.
Does a positive stain prove cancer?
No. The result must be interpreted with the tissue appearance and the rest of the clinical assessment.
