What should you know about far lateral microdiscectomy?

Short answer

Far lateral microdiscectomy removes disc material pressing on a spinal nerve through a small incision beside the spine.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Target
A disc fragment compressing an exiting spinal nerve
Approach
A small incision beside the spine with magnification
Recovery
A staged return to movement and daily activities

What the procedure means

A far lateral disc herniation sits toward the side of the spinal canal, where it can irritate a nerve as it exits the spine. This can cause radiating leg pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. The surgeon uses magnification to reach the affected area and remove the fragment that is causing pressure. The approach and suitability depend on the level of the spine, the disc position, your symptoms, and examination findings.

The operation addresses mechanical nerve compression; it does not repair every cause of back or leg pain. Your clinician may discuss non-surgical options first, such as targeted injection or a rehabilitation programme, when they are appropriate.

Preparing and recovering

Before surgery, share your medicines, allergies, previous operations, and any change in leg strength with the surgical team. Follow instructions about eating, medication, transport, and activity. Afterward, walking is often introduced early, while bending, lifting, and twisting are increased according to your clinician’s plan. Keep the incision clean and attend follow-up appointments. Physiotherapy may help restore movement, trunk control, and confidence once the team considers it suitable.

Recovery is individual. A gradual return to ordinary activity is guided by pain, wound healing, nerve symptoms, and the demands of your work.

When to seek care

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, or new weakness. Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, rapidly progressing leg weakness, or severe symptoms affecting both legs. Sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing also needs emergency attention.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which nerve is compressed, what finding supports surgery, what restrictions apply at home, how medicines should be managed, and which symptoms should trigger an urgent call. You can also ask how this approach compares with endoscopic spine surgery or continued non-surgical care.

Questions people ask

Is far lateral microdiscectomy the same as ordinary microdiscectomy?

Both remove nerve-compressing disc material, but the far lateral approach reaches a fragment positioned more to the side of the spine.

Will surgery remove all back pain?

It is intended to relieve pain caused by nerve compression; pain from other spinal or muscular sources may need separate care.
