What should you know about familial neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is a cancer that begins in immature nerve cells, often in tissues near the adrenal glands or along the spine. In familial cases, a genetic change can be passed through a family and make the condition more likely to occur. Many children with neuroblastoma do not have a known family pattern, so a diagnosis alone does not prove that relatives carry an inherited change.

A clinical genetics team reviews the child’s diagnosis, age at diagnosis, tumour features, and family history. Testing may be offered to the affected child and, when appropriate, relatives. Results can clarify who needs closer discussion, but they do not predict exactly whether cancer will develop or how it will behave.

Ask for referral to a paediatric oncology and genetic counselling team if more than one relative has had neuroblastoma, if a child was diagnosed unusually young, or if your specialist raises an inherited cause.
