What should you know about familial hirsutism?

Short answer

Familial hirsutism is inherited excess coarse hair growth in androgen-sensitive areas, often without another clear illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Hair pattern
Coarse hair in androgen-sensitive areas
Family clue
Similar long-standing growth in relatives
Review trigger
Sudden or rapidly changing growth

What it means

The hair may be darker, thicker, or more noticeable on the face, chest, abdomen, back, or upper thighs. Family members can share a similar pattern, and growth may become more noticeable after puberty. Familial hirsutism is not the same as ordinary fine body hair. A clinician may ask about menstrual regularity, acne, scalp hair thinning, medicines, and the speed of change because those details help distinguish a family pattern from a hormonal condition. The presence of facial hair does not by itself identify a specific cause.

What you can do

Choose grooming methods that fit your skin and hair type. Shaving does not make hair grow back thicker, while waxing or plucking can irritate sensitive skin. Laser hair removal may reduce growth in suitable hair and skin combinations, and electrolysis hair removal treats individual follicles; several appointments and maintenance may be needed. A clinician may discuss spironolactone treatment when hormonal influence is suspected, but it requires medical review and is not suitable for everyone. Do not self-start hormone medicines.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment if hair growth becomes noticeably faster, appears suddenly, or comes with severe acne, voice deepening, increased muscle bulk, irregular periods, or scalp hair loss. Seek care promptly for rapid changes or significant pelvic pain. A long-standing family pattern can still be evaluated, especially if it causes distress or has never been assessed.

Questions for your doctor

Does my pattern fit familial hirsutism? Do I need a hormonal assessment? Which hair-removal method suits my skin and hair? Could spironolactone help, and what safety checks or pregnancy precautions apply?

Questions people ask

Does shaving make hirsutism worse?

No. Shaving cuts hair at the surface and does not change the follicle or make new growth thicker.

Is familial hirsutism always hormonal?

Not necessarily. A family pattern can occur without another hormonal disorder, but new or rapid changes deserve assessment.
