False Labour vs Real Labour: How to Tell the Difference

Short answer
False labour contractions often ease with rest or a change of activity, while real labour tends to become more regular, longer, and stronger.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Practice contractions
- May settle with rest, fluids, or a position change.
- Labour pattern
- Often becomes more regular and progressively stronger.
How contractions can differ
Braxton Hicks contractions are practice tightenings of the womb. They may be uncomfortable, irregular, and felt mainly across the front of the abdomen. They can settle after hydration, rest, emptying the bladder, or changing position. Real labour commonly develops a repeating pattern, with contractions that continue despite these changes and gradually demand more attention.
The sensations are not identical for everyone, and early labour can be difficult to identify at home. Other signs may include a show, leaking fluid, back pressure, or pelvic pressure. A mucus discharge alone does not establish that labour is active.
What to do when contractions begin
Time contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next, and note how long each lasts. Rest, drink fluids if you have not been told to restrict them, and keep your maternity unit’s contact details nearby. Follow the personalised instructions you were given about when to call or attend. If you are unsure, contact the maternity team and describe the pattern rather than trying to label it yourself.
When to contact maternity care urgently
Seek urgent advice for vaginal bleeding, a gush or ongoing leak of fluid, reduced fetal movement, severe constant pain, fever, or contractions before your expected term. Regular contractions with pelvic pressure or low back pain can be a sign of preterm labour and need prompt assessment. Read more about [Preterm Labour](/conditions/preterm-labour/).
Questions for your doctor
Ask how your unit defines active labour, when to come in, how to monitor fetal movement, and which symptoms mean you should call immediately, including fluid leakage or bleeding.

Questions people ask
Can Braxton Hicks contractions be painful?
Yes. Practice contractions may be uncomfortable or painful, so their changing pattern and response to rest are useful clues.
Should I wait if I am not sure?
No. Call your maternity team when contractions or other symptoms concern you, especially before term.
