False ceiling plaster of Paris: what to know

Plaster of Paris is applied over padding and a protective layer to form a temporary or definitive cast. When mixed with water, it sets around the limb and helps limit movement while tissues heal or an alignment is maintained. It can be shaped to accommodate swelling and may be used in fracture casting or staged correction such as clubfoot casting. The cast should feel supportive, not sharply tight, and it must remain dry unless the treating team gives different instructions.

Keep the limb elevated as advised, move the free fingers or toes gently and inspect the skin at the edges. Do not insert objects inside the cast, trim it or remove padding yourself. Protect it from water and check that it has not cracked, softened or become loose. Follow the appointment plan so the cast can be examined, changed or removed at the right stage.

Seek urgent care for numbness, blue or unusually pale fingers or toes, severe swelling, worsening pain, inability to move exposed digits or a cold limb. Contact the cast team promptly if there is wet plaster, a bad smell, drainage, rubbing at one spot, a crack or sudden looseness. Do not wait for the next appointment if circulation or sensation changes.
