False and true labour pain

Short answer
False labour contractions tend to remain irregular and settle, while true labour becomes more regular, stronger, and closer together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Practice contractions
- Often irregular and may settle with rest or hydration
- Labour pattern
- Usually becomes more regular, longer, and stronger
How contractions can differ
Braxton Hicks contractions are practice tightenings. They may be uncomfortable, vary in strength, and ease after rest, hydration, movement, or a change of position. Established labour contractions usually develop a pattern, last longer, and continue despite those changes. They help the cervix open and thin. Sensations vary, so timing and the overall pattern matter more than one contraction or a single pain score.
What to do at home
Time contractions from the start of one to the start of the next and record how long each lasts. Drink fluids, rest, and try a position change if your maternity team has not given different instructions. Keep your hospital contact details and transport plan ready. If you are unsure, call your maternity unit with the timing, pregnancy stage, and any fluid loss or bleeding.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity service for regular painful contractions, waters breaking, vaginal bleeding, reduced fetal movement, or pressure and backache before your expected due period. Preterm labour can begin with contractions, pelvic pressure, backache, or fluid change and needs prompt assessment. Seek emergency help for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, or feeling seriously unwell.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how your unit defines a contraction pattern, when to come in, how to monitor fetal movement, and what to do if fluid leaks slowly rather than in a gush.
