Falciparum malaria treatment

A clinician confirms malaria with blood testing while checking fever, alertness, breathing, circulation, ability to drink, and signs of organ involvement. Treatment depends on the parasite, local medicine guidance, previous prevention or treatment, pregnancy status, allergies, and whether tablets can be absorbed.

Uncomplicated illness may be treated with an oral antimalarial combination prescribed for the specific situation. Severe illness needs hospital treatment, often through a vein at first, with close monitoring before a suitable oral course is completed. Never substitute a friend's tablets or stop early because the fever improves.

Seek urgent medical care for suspected infection and tell the team where and when you travelled, what prevention medicine you used, and every medicine or supplement you take. Take prescribed doses at the instructed times and report vomiting, rash, worsening fever, or difficulty swallowing. Keep follow-up appointments so recovery and parasite clearance can be checked when advised.

Emergency assessment is needed for confusion, collapse, seizures, severe weakness, breathing problems, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, jaundice, or reduced urine. Fever or chills that continue after treatment also require prompt review; do not wait for the next routine appointment.
