What should you know about fainting in pregnancy?

Short answer
Fainting in pregnancy can follow blood-pressure changes, overheating, dehydration, or low blood sugar, but every episode deserves attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First response
- Lie on your side and move away from hazards
- Tell your team
- Report every faint, including a brief episode with quick recovery
Why it can happen during pregnancy
Pregnancy changes circulation and can make standing quickly, prolonged standing, heat, crowded spaces, or lying flat uncomfortable. Skipping food or fluids may add to dizziness. Anaemia is another possible contributor. Fainting itself does not identify one cause, so the timing, posture, symptoms, injury, and stage of pregnancy matter. Later in pregnancy, lying flat may make some people feel unwell; turning onto the side can help while waiting for advice.
Safe steps after dizziness or fainting
Sit or lie on your side as soon as warning symptoms begin, away from stairs and traffic. If someone has fainted, place them on their side when appropriate, check breathing, and seek help if recovery is not prompt. Once fully alert, take small sips of fluid and a snack if medically suitable. Rise slowly, avoid overheating, and tell your midwife, obstetric team, or doctor about the episode even if recovery was quick.
When to seek urgent maternity care
Call emergency services for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, chest pain, breathlessness, a serious fall, severe headache, new weakness, abnormal breathing, or delayed recovery. Contact maternity care urgently for reduced fetal movement, persistent dizziness, repeated fainting, palpitations, or fainting after an injury. Do not drive yourself while still dizzy or unwell.
Questions for your maternity team
Could anaemia, blood pressure, hydration, or blood sugar explain this episode? Should my medicines, meals, fluids, or activity change? Do I need blood tests, heart monitoring, or an assessment after the fall?
