The short answer
Fainting after exercise can happen when stopping suddenly causes blood pressure to fall, but it needs careful assessment. Moving muscles help return blood to the heart; standing still immediately after exertion can reduce that support. Fainting while actively exercising is more concerning than fainting after stopping.
Possible causes
Heat, sweating, dehydration, not eating and intense effort can contribute to dizziness or collapse. Low blood sugar may cause sweating, trembling and confusion. Anaemia can reduce oxygen delivery during exertion, while an abnormal rhythm such as atrial fibrillation may cause palpitations or weakness. The setting, warning symptoms, family history and any chest discomfort help a clinician judge the next tests and whether exercise should pause.
What to do at the time
Stop exercising and help the person lie flat with legs raised. Move them to a cool place, loosen tight clothing and check breathing. Do not let them stand quickly or continue the session. Once fully awake, give water in small sips and a snack if they can swallow. Avoid driving and further strenuous activity until a clinician has advised you. Write down what happened before, during and after the collapse.
When urgent care is needed
Call emergency services for fainting during exercise, chest pain, breathlessness, a racing or irregular heartbeat, seizure, serious injury, prolonged confusion or failure to wake. Urgent assessment is also needed for repeated episodes or a family history of sudden cardiac death. Even a quick recovery after a first exertional faint warrants prompt medical review before returning to strenuous exercise.
Questions for your doctor
Was this a post-exercise blood-pressure drop or something requiring heart testing? When can I safely exercise again? Should hydration, nutrition, blood count or rhythm be checked?
