Fainting after anesthesia: what should you know?

After a procedure, standing, fasting, fluid loss, pain, nausea, or medicines can make blood pressure drop. Blood loss, anaemia, low blood sugar, dehydration, or an abnormal heart rhythm may also be relevant. The timing matters: tell the surgical or anaesthesia team whether the episode happened while sitting up, walking, urinating, vomiting, or taking a medicine.

Do not walk alone after feeling faint. Lie down or sit with support, ask a responsible adult to stay with you, and follow the discharge team’s instructions about fluids, food, and medicines. Contact the treating team promptly to report the episode, especially if you struck your head or fainted after returning home.

Get emergency help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, worsening abdominal pain, repeated fainting, seizure-like movements, severe confusion, or inability to wake. Urgent help is also needed after a significant fall or if the person looks pale, clammy, or unusually weak.

Ask whether the episode could relate to the procedure, blood loss, fluid intake, or a medicine; whether blood pressure, blood tests, or an ECG is needed; and when it is safe to shower, walk, drive, or exercise.
