Failure to Thrive: Long-Term Effects

Short answer
Failure to thrive may affect physical growth, learning, energy and emotional wellbeing if poor growth continues without support.

What long-term effects can occur?
Failure to thrive, also called faltering growth, describes a pattern rather than a single disease. Ongoing undernutrition or an untreated medical problem can slow weight gain and height growth. A child may have less energy for play, reduced concentration, delayed developmental progress or difficulty building strength. Feeding stress can also affect family routines and a child’s relationship with meals. These effects are not inevitable: they depend on the cause, how long growth has been affected, and whether support starts early.
How can you support recovery?
Arrange a child health assessment so growth can be plotted over time and feeding, digestion, sleep, development and family circumstances can be reviewed. Keep a simple record of meals, drinks, vomiting, diarrhoea and appetite if your clinician requests it. Offer calm, regular meals and follow an individual nutrition plan rather than adding supplements without advice. Treatment may involve nutritional support, feeding guidance or care for an underlying condition. Developmental follow-up can show whether skills and energy are improving.
When should you seek care?
Seek prompt medical advice if weight is falling, feeding becomes increasingly difficult, or your child is unusually tired or less responsive. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration such as very little urine, or a child who cannot keep fluids down. Do not wait for a routine review when a baby is difficult to wake or appears seriously unwell.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what growth pattern has been observed, which causes need checking, what changes should be made at home, and when weight, height and development should be reviewed.
