What should you know about factitious fever?

Short answer
Fever is a raised body temperature caused by many possible processes, so the temperature pattern and accompanying symptoms guide medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding a fever
Fever is the body's regulated response to an underlying trigger, often an infection, inflammation, or occasionally a medicine or other condition. Chills and shivering can happen as the body raises its set point, while sweating may occur as it returns toward normal. A reading alone does not identify the cause. Respiratory symptoms can occur with Acute Bronchitis, Bronchiolitis, Common Cold, COVID-19, or Croup; skin changes can occur with Cellulitis or Chickenpox; and travel or animal exposure may matter when Brucellosis is considered.
What to do
Rest, drink fluids, and use a thermometer according to its instructions. Record readings with the time, the measurement site, medicines taken, and any new symptoms. Wear light clothing and avoid strenuous activity while unwell. Do not combine or repeat fever medicines beyond the label directions, and seek advice before giving them to a child. Limit close contact when an infection is possible, particularly around infants, older adults, or people with weakened immunity.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent medical help for confusion, difficulty breathing, a seizure, a stiff neck, a severe headache, a spreading rash, fainting, or inability to drink. Prompt assessment is also needed for a baby with a fever, a person with a weakened immune system, or fever that is worsening or not settling. Tell the clinician about recent travel, sick contacts, new medicines, and any localising symptom such as cough, painful urination, or a skin wound.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes fit the symptom pattern, whether testing is needed, how to monitor temperature, and which changes should prompt an immediate return.

Questions people ask
Does every fever need antibiotics?
No. Many fevers are linked to illnesses for which antibiotics do not help; a clinician decides whether treatment is appropriate after assessing the cause.
Why do chills happen with fever?
Chills can occur while the body is raising its internal temperature set point, even though the measured temperature is already elevated.
