What should you know about facial port wine stain?

The colour comes from small blood vessels close to the skin surface. A port wine stain may be present from birth and commonly affects one side of the face, although its pattern varies. It is different from a bruise because it does not follow the usual course of a bruise fading.

A clinician considers the stain's colour, thickness, borders, location, and any change in texture. An eye or neurological assessment may be considered when the mark involves particular facial areas or is accompanied by other findings.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain, the mark becomes raised, or its colour or surface changes. Protect the area from strong sunlight and avoid irritating products. If treatment is desired, pulsed dye laser treatment may be discussed; the clinician will explain expected sessions, eye protection, skin preparation, and recovery.

Seek prompt assessment for bleeding, ulceration, a new lump, rapid thickening, or a sudden change in colour. Urgent care is appropriate for new weakness, seizures, severe headache, sudden vision change, or eye pain occurring with a facial vascular mark.
